Tomas Garcia del Rio
Age: 32 Home Country: Argentina Team: Goose Creek Handicap: 8 How many years playing the sport: I started playing when I was five years old with my father and grandfather at my family’s farm in Lobos, Argentina. Pre-game ritual: I just make sure my horses are all prepared. You travel around the world for polo. Which destination has been your favorite? The Hamptons. Favorite part of playing polo: I enjoy being around the horses, the barn and everything that goes into playing polo. Favorite local hang-out when playing at Greenwich Polo Club: Last year I was staying in the Hamptons when I played at Greenwich so I didn’t have much chance to sample the local restaurants. I will make sure and hit a few this season. Favorite thing to do when not on the field: I like playing golf. My handicap is 14 and I have tried to improve but it isn’t easy! Favorite song: “Wanted Dead or Alive” by Bon Jovi. If I weren’t a polo player I would be: I would be doing something around horses for sure – maybe I would be a groom, a veterinarian or working with a polo player. Favorite all-time horse and why? Acrobata. She is one of my father’s horses and I have played her for 10 years and in many tournaments. I have a soft spot for her. She’s still playing, although she’s getting a little older now. My best horse right now is called Brenda – she’s fast, strong and a calm horse to play on. I can always rely on her and I trust her a lot.
